![]() ![]() I headed for the long matte black bar that ran the far wall on the main floor. ![]() The upper floor was home to pool tables and a second bar, and it wrapped around like a horseshoe, creating a balcony that was open in the middle to give a view of the stage. The bottom floor was surrounded by booths that lined the walls, tables and couches in the open space, and the stage and dance floor were to the far right. The lights hanging from the cavernous ceiling were dimmed. Place I’d built from the ground up with a little help from my brothers. A biker bar that had the rest of Redemption Hills flocking in droves for a chance to dip their toes into the danger they could feel seeping from the walls and still be able to walk away from it in the morning without feeling an ounce of guilt. Fuckin’ kick-ass bands and the best drinks in the small, trendy mountain city that was tucked in the most northeastern corner of California. Absolution was this cross between luxe and dive. It set up the vibe in anticipation of the band that would be taking the stage in about an hour. The reasons for this choice were specific and as such a strong rationale provided for the choice of methodology: Phenomenography is a qualitative approach. Music blared through the speakers and reverberated along the floors. Like the many strands of wool and silk woven together into one cloth, so these people came together in a complex dance to create the whole picture. Weavers, patrons, designers, artists, merchants and apprentices were involved in their making, and behind them were the wives, daughters and servants who exercised influences over their men. Tapestries give an appearance of order and continuity, as if designed and made by one person, belying the complicated process required to create them. Beautiful, intricate and expertly made, they are also mysterious in their origin and meaning. The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are a set of six medieval tapestries. Reading Bartleby I was very surprised how humorous it is. I can’t tell you why but some books just do not sound like you would like them. I was never tempted to read Moby Dick although my parents had a copy with beautiful etchings. I have just read and reviewed Delerm’s novel Quelque chose en lui de Bartleby and since it was obviously inspired by Melville’s story, I had to read it. There is a specific reason, why I read Melville’s novella Bartleby. ![]() Set in the mid-19th century on New York City’s Wall Street, it was also, perhaps, Herman Melville’s most prescient story: what if a young man caught up in the rat race of commerce finally just said, “I would prefer not to”? Academics hail it as the beginning of modernism, but to readers around the world-even those daunted by Moby-Dick-BARTLEBY THE SCRIVENER is simply one of the most absorbing and moving novellas ever. ![]() ![]() The first rule of chapter two, rule number 12, talks about writing style. This writing style has allowed me to rephrase sentences on a page, and I’ve been able to use parenthetic expressions a lot more frequently, making my writing more concise and in turn, more authoritative. But I used to always use either ( ) or -, and never a comma. ![]() I feel they give added context to the writer’s meaning without the need for an entirely new sentence. Enclose parenthetic expressions between commasįirst up to bat is rule number three outlined in the first chapter. I wanted to share with you some of the key points I’ve learned from this book, and how it’s affected my writing. I recommend, if you’re serious about the craft, that you invest. It’s a book based on improving writing style, told in the most simplest of forms. There’s no fluff, no fancy tiptoeing, and definitely no waffle.
